Looseness of Adjustable Office Chair
Admin October 11, 2026
If an adjustable office chair is loose, first identify the cause and then address it accordingly. Here are some common causes and solutions:

Loose Components
- Loose screws: This is the most common cause. Flip the chair over or place it on a stable and open surface. First, visually inspect all visible connection points, focusing on the screws connecting the five-star base to the gas lift, the chassis fixing screws, and the bolts connecting the armrests to the seat. Then, use the handle of a screwdriver or a small hammer to lightly tap key fasteners, such as the five fixing points of the five-star base and the center turntable of the chassis. Tight components will produce a clear sound, while loose ones will sound dull. Finally, use appropriately sized Allen wrenches, screwdrivers, and other tools to tighten each suspected loose screw one by one, paying special attention to the screws on the five-star base, the chassis, and the fixing screws at both ends of the gas lift.
- Deformation of the chassis mechanism: Prolonged overloading or severe impacts to the chair can cause slight deformation of the chassis steel plate, altering the position of the pull rod and preventing the valve from closing completely, resulting in a loose chair. This situation is relatively rare. If chassis deformation is suspected, it is advisable to seek professional repair services.
Gas Lift Issues
- Aging and pressure loss of the gas lift: The gas lift is a consumable part. After long-term repeated lifting and lowering, the internal seals age, allowing high-pressure gas to slowly leak out, reducing pressure and weakening the locking ability, causing the chair to become loose and automatically descend. This is more common if the chair has been in use for over five years, and the gas lift needs to be replaced.
- Air leakage due to seal wear: The gas lift has multiple layers of seals inside. Dust, moisture, and aging lubricant can enter the interior, degrading the sealing performance. Even if there is no significant gas loss, micro-leaks can prevent the valve from locking, causing the chair to become loose. This type of failure is generally not repairable by disassembly and requires replacement of the gas lift.
Other Component Issues
- Damaged wheels: Damaged wheels can easily cause the chair to wobble and become loose, necessitating wheel replacement.
- Adjustment pull rod issues: The metal pull rod connecting the adjustment handle and the gas lift under the chair may continuously press the pin if its installation position is offset, screws are loose, or plastic parts are worn, keeping the valve partially open and causing the chair to slowly descend and become loose. This type of failure is relatively easy to repair. Check and adjust the position of the pull rod, tighten the screws, or replace worn plastic parts.
If you are unable to resolve the issue yourself, it is recommended to seek professional repair services. Additionally, when using an adjustable chair, avoid maintaining the same posture for extended periods, refrain from making overly vigorous movements or jumps, and regularly inspect the base, gas lift, wheels, and other parts.
