Classification of Adjustable Office Chairs

Admin October 12, 2026

Adjustable office chairs are mainly classified into three types based on their lifting mechanisms: pneumatic, hydraulic, and mechanical, with other types such as screw-type also available.

Pneumatic Adjustable Chairs: These are the most common type on the market. They utilize a high-pressure nitrogen gas cylinder to achieve smooth seat lifting and lowering, adjusting the seat height through the movement of the piston rod inside the cylinder. The cylinder is typically filled with high-purity nitrogen or other inert gases, a design that makes pneumatic adjustable chairs cost-effective, simple in structure, and flexible in operation, thus widely favored by consumers. However, pneumatic adjustable chairs also pose certain safety risks. If low-quality pneumatic rods are used, such as those with insufficient nitrogen purity or thin cylinder walls, the pressure inside the cylinder may rise sharply under conditions of frequent lifting, high temperatures, etc., leading to an explosion risk. Therefore, when choosing pneumatic adjustable chairs, consumers should pay attention to the product's quality and safety performance.

Hydraulic Adjustable Chairs: Hydraulic adjustable chairs control seat height through pressure principles. However, due to the high cost of hydraulic systems and their relatively complex structure, hydraulic adjustable chairs have a lower market share in China. Additionally, the height adjustment sensitivity of hydraulic adjustable chairs is relatively low, which may not meet the needs of some users for rapid height adjustment.

Mechanical Adjustable Chairs: Mechanical adjustable chairs achieve seat height adjustment through mechanical structures. This type of adjustable chair typically has a relatively simple mechanical structure, resulting in lower costs. However, the adjustment method for mechanical adjustable chairs may be relatively cumbersome, requiring users to manually operate mechanical components to adjust the height.

In addition to the three main types mentioned above, there are also other types of adjustable chairs on the market, such as screw-type chairs. These chairs may adopt different lifting principles and technologies to meet the needs and preferences of different users.
