Adjusting the Height of an Office Chair
Admin October 14, 2026
The height of an office chair can be adjusted using the following methods:

I. Locate and Operate the Hand Controls
- Basic Operation: Sit on the chair and adjust the height using the lever or knob located beneath the seat. For example, the C100 Premium office chair requires pulling the metal handle forward; some models require turning the knob or repeatedly pushing the lever up and down (for pneumatic models).
- Operation Details: When adjusting, move the chair a few inches (or centimeters) at a time to avoid losing control due to rapid movement. After adjustment, return the lever to its original position to ensure the locking mechanism is engaged. Some models require pulling the lever up to raise the seat and pushing it down to lower the seat.
II. Adjust from a Standing Position
- Height Reference Standard: When standing, adjust the front of the chair to just below your knees. After sitting down, ensure your feet are flat on the ground and your thighs are parallel to the floor. This method prevents your legs from hanging in the air due to a chair that is too high or being compressed due to a chair that is too low.
- Eye-Level Alignment: After adjustment, check if your eyes are level with the computer screen to reduce neck fatigue. If the desk height is fixed, prioritize matching the desk height and then adjust the chair so that your arms hang naturally with your elbows at a 90-degree angle.
III. Adjust Using Components Beneath the Chair
- Pneumatic Lever Control: If there is a handle beneath the seat, pulling it up compresses the high-pressure gas inside the pneumatic rod, raising the seat; turning the handle upward and lifting your body weight lowers the seat.
- Fixed Screw Adjustment: If the swivel chair has a fixed screw at the bottom, loosen the screw first, manually adjust the seat to the desired height, and then tighten the screw to secure it. This method is suitable for older chairs without pneumatic rods.
- Dual Lever Operation: If there are two levers beneath the seat, sit on the chair and lift the height adjustment lever until you reach the desired height, then release it; the other lever may control the backrest angle or other functions.
- Handle Function Identification: If there are two handles beneath the chair, determine which one controls the height by trial and error. Typically, the short handle controls the height, while the long handle controls the backrest or armrests.
IV. Adjustment Precautions
- Compatibility: Adjust according to the height of your desk and your own height to ensure your eyes are level with the computer screen and your arms hang naturally with your elbows at a 90-degree angle.
- Comfort: Avoid a chair that is too low, causing your body to sink into it, or too high, causing eye strain. After adjustment, maintain good posture with your back against the backrest and your feet flat on the ground.
- Troubleshooting: If the chair is difficult to adjust (e.g., the lever is stuck or the pneumatic rod fails), it is recommended to replace the chair to avoid damage or safety hazards caused by forced operation.
