Adjust Office Chair Height

Admin October 09, 2026

There are several methods to adjust the height of an office chair, and you can choose the appropriate one based on the type of chair:

1. Adjust using hand-operated controls If the chair is equipped with a control lever or knob, you can try the following operations:

  • Lever-type adjustment: While sitting on the chair, simply pull up the control lever (some models may require turning the knob). Move it a few centimeters at a time until you reach a comfortable height, and then return the lever to its original position. Some pneumatic chairs may require repeated up-and-down pumping of the lever for fine-tuning the height.
  • Standing adjustment: If adjusting while sitting is difficult, stand up and pull up the lever to raise the seat to a position just below your knees, ensuring that your thighs are parallel to the ground when you sit back down.
  • Directional differences: Some chairs require pulling the lever upward to raise the seat and pressing it downward to lower it. If the operation doesn't work, try the opposite action or consult the instruction manual.

2. Adjust using the handle under the seat

  • Single-handle design: If there is only one handle under the seat, pulling it upward will raise the seat (due to the compression and rebound of the gas in the air rod). Turning the handle downward while sitting will lower the seat (by preventing the gas from rebounding).
  • Dual-handle design: If there are two handles under the chair, usually one controls the height and the other adjusts the backrest angle. You can determine the height adjustment handle through repeated trials and then operate it as described above.

3. Adjust using fixed screws This method is suitable for office chairs with fixed screws at the bottom:

  • You need to invert the chair or lean over to observe the bottom and use a tool to loosen the screws.
  • Manually adjust the seat to the desired height and then retighten the screws to secure it. Note: Ensure that the screws are completely tightened to prevent the seat from loosening during use.

4. Adjust using adjustment rods Some office chairs are equipped with two adjustment rods under the seat:

  • Height adjustment rod: While sitting, lift the handle, and release it when the seat reaches the desired height.
  • Left-right adjustment rod: Used to adjust the horizontal position of the armrests or the seat. It should be operated separately from the height adjustment.

Precautions during adjustment

  • Ergonomic fit: After adjustment, ensure that your eyes are level with the computer screen to reduce neck fatigue. Your thighs should be parallel to the ground, and your feet should be flat on the ground or on a footrest.
  • Avoid extreme heights: A seat that is too low can lead to slouching, while a seat that is too high can increase shoulder and neck pressure. Maintain a moderate height.
  • Replace chairs that are difficult to adjust: If the chair has issues such as sticking, air leakage, or a damaged adjustment mechanism, it is advisable to replace it with a new one to avoid long-term use that may affect your health.
