Accident-prone Office Chairs
Admin October 09, 2026
Accident-prone office chairs mainly refer to the sudden explosion phenomenon of pneumatic lifting swivel chairs caused by component defects, often related to inferior pneumatic rods, which can cause serious injuries or property damage in severe cases.

Typical Accident Cases
- Personal Injury Cases: In 2013, a Ms. Liu in Xiamen was sitting on a swivel chair purchased online when it suddenly exploded. A three-centimeter-thick steel rod pierced her lower body, and more than ten metal fragments were removed after a six-hour surgery. In 2009, a 14-year-old boy in Jiaozhou, Shandong, died after a top rod pierced his body while adjusting a pneumatic chair.
- Property Damage Cases: In 2017, an office chair exploded in Anhui, and the impact force damaged a computer case. A similar chair explosion incident also occurred in Zhoushan, Zhejiang, in 2007.
Core Causes of Accidents
- Gas Filling Issues in Pneumatic Rods: Regular products are filled with nitrogen, while inferior pneumatic rods use air to reduce costs. The oxygen in the air undergoes oxidation reactions over time, causing abnormal increases in internal pressure and ultimately leading to explosions.
- Material Issues of Pneumatic Rods: If the container wall is too thin or inferior metal materials are used, it may break due to insufficient strength during long-term use or pressure fluctuations.
- Sealing Issues of Pneumatic Rods: Poor sealing at the seal can lead to slow gas leakage or sudden gas release. Although the probability is low, it can still be a cause of explosions.
- Usage Habit Issues: Sitting down abruptly or frequently adjusting the height can accelerate the wear of internal components of the pneumatic rod, reduce its structural stability, and increase the risk of explosions.
Key Prevention Measures
- Choose Regular Products: Prioritize products priced over 200 yuan with clear manufacturers and testing certifications, and avoid purchasing unbranded or low-priced inferior pneumatic chairs.
- Check Pneumatic Rod Quality: Test the smoothness of lifting and lowering, observe whether there are clear markings on the surface of the pneumatic rod (such as production date and certification marks), and ensure there is no air leakage or abnormal noise.
- Install Explosion-proof Plates: An explosion-proof plate with a thickness of at least 2 millimeters should be installed between the seat cushion and the pneumatic rod to effectively block fragments flying out during an explosion.
- Standardize Usage Habits: Sit down gently and avoid frequently adjusting the height to reduce mechanical wear on the pneumatic rod.
